    Examining sustainability performance in the supply chain: The case of the Greek dairy sector

We assessed the importance of these indicators based on the relevant perceptions of key members of this chain. A structured questionnaire was developed where nineteen sustainability-related issues were examined. Two hundred and fifty three members of the Greek dairy supply chain responded including breeders, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and catering companies. Our findings illustrate the immediate need for improvement in many key sustainability performance indicators. They also show the critical role of large dairy manufacturers who are the “sustainability performance champions” in this chain and are the driving force for the implementation of many sustainability initiatives.European Unio

    Recurrent miscarriage is the loss of three or more consecutive pregnancies before 24 weeks gestation and affects up to 1% of women. Until recently there has been a paucity of research into the psychological impact of this experience, and the available research has tended to almost exclusively focus on the incidence and nature of maternal distress and wellbeing. Yet the research on the psychological impact of a single miscarriage suggests that the experience of recurrent miscarriage is likely to affect both partners as individuals and as a couple. The aim of the current study was to address the gap in the literature by carrying out a quantitative cross-sectional examination of the psychological, dyadic and sexual functioning in a sample of 80 couples attending the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic (RMC) for their first appointment. Measures administered included an assessment of distress using the HADS, an assessment of coping strategies using the COPE, an assessment of couple adjustment using the DAS, and an assessment of sexual functioning using the GRISS. In addition, social support was assessed using the SOS, and the couple's investment in the roles and goals in their life, including becoming a parent, was assessed utilising the RAG. Following the social cognitive and family life cycle models, it was proposed that partners who had relatively over-invested in becoming parents, in comparison with other roles and goals, would be most vulnerable to emotional distress and dyadic/sexual dysfunction, and would be most likely to use inadequate coping. These hypotheses were not supported by the data. However as predicted, dyadic adjustment and avoidance coping were found to be significantly related to emotional distress in both men and women. Furthermore, female emotion- focused coping was significantly related to female anxiety. After controlling for dyadic adjustment, the only type of coping independently associated with emotional distress was female emotion-focused coping in relation to female anxiety. After controlling for coping, dyadic adjustment continued to be a predictor of male anxiety and depression and female anxiety, but not depression. Contrary to predictions sexual functioning was not associated with emotional distress and although social support was found to have a significant independent relationship with female depression, this relationship was no longer significant once other variables were controlled for. The results are discussed in light of clinical implications and with consideration of qualitative feedback also collected from participants

    On manifolds admitting the consistent Lagrangian formulation for higher spin fields

    We study a possibility of Lagrangian formulation for free higher spin bosonic totally symmetric tensor field on the background manifold characterizing by the arbitrary metric, vector and third rank tensor fields in framework of BRST approach. Assuming existence of massless and flat limits in the Lagrangian and using the most general form of the operators of constraints we show that the algebra generated by these operators will be closed only for constant curvature space with no nontrivial coupling to the third rank tensor and the strength of the vector fields.     Using learning design as a framework for supporting the design and reuse of OER

    The paper will argue that adopting a learning design methodology may provide a vehicle for enabling better design and reuse of Open Educational Resources (OERs). It will describe a learning design methodology, which is being developed and implemented at the Open University in the UK. The aim is to develop a 'pick and mix' learning design toolbox of different resources and tools to help designers/teachers make informed decisions about creating new or adapting existing learning activities. The methodology is applicable for designers/teachers designing in a traditional context – such as creation of materials as part of a formal curriculum, but also has value for those wanting to create OERs or adapt and repurpose existing OERs. With the increasing range of OERs now available through initiatives as part of the Open Courseware movement, we believe that methodologies, such as the one we describe in this paper, which can help guide reuse and adaptation will become increasingly important and arguably are an important aspect of ensuring longer term sustainability and uptake of OERs. Our approach adopts an empirically based approach to understanding and representing the design process. This includes a range of evaluation studies (capturing of case studies, interviews with designers/teachers, in-depth course evaluation and focus groups/workshops), which are helping to develop our understanding of how designers/teachers go about creating new learning activities. Alongside this we are collating an extensive set of tools and resources to support the design process, as well as developing a new Learning Design tool that helps teachers articulate and represent their design ideas. The paper will describe how we have adapted a mind mapping and argumentation tool, Compendium, for this purpose and how it is being used to help designers and teachers create and share learning activities. It will consider how initial evaluation of the use of the tool for learning design has been positive; users report that the tool is easy to use and helps them organise and articulate their learning designs. Importantly the tool also enables them to share and discuss their thinking about the design process. However it is also clear that visualising the design process is only one aspect of design, which is complex and multi-faceted

    Constructing the Cubic Interaction Vertex of Higher Spin Gauge Fields

    We propose a method of construction of a cubic interaction in massless Higher Spin gauge theory both in flat and in AdS space-times of arbitrary dimensions. We consider a triplet formulation of the Higher Spin gauge theory and generalize the Higher Spin symmetry algebra of the free model to the corresponding algebra for the case of cubic interaction. The generators of this new algebra carry indexes which label the three Higher Spin fields involved into the cubic interaction. The method is based on the use of oscillator formalism and on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) technique. We derive general conditions on the form of cubic interaction vertex and discuss the ambiguities of the vertex which result from field redefinitions. This method can in principle be applied for constructing the Higher Spin interaction vertex at any order. Our results are a first step towards the construction of a Lagrangian for interacting Higher Spin gauge fields that can be holographically studied.Comment: Published Version; comments added in introduction; minor typos and references correcte

    Cosmological Solution from D-brane motion in NS5-Branes background

    We study dynamics of a D3-brane propagating in the vicinity of k coincident NS5 branes. We show that when gsg_s is small, there exists a regime in which dynamics of the D-brane is governed by Dirac-Born-Infeld action while higher order derivative in the expansion can not be neglected. This leads to a restriction on how fast scalar field may roll. We analyze the motion of a rolling scalar field in this regime, and extend the analysis to cosmological systems obtained by coupling this type of field theory to four dimensinal gravity.     D-branes and SQCD in Non-Critical Superstring Theory

    Using exact boundary conformal field theory methods we analyze the D-brane physics of a specific four-dimensional non-critical superstring theory which involves the N=2 SL(2)/U(1) Kazama-Suzuki model at level 1. Via the holographic duality of hep-th/9907178 our results are relevant for D-brane dynamics in the background of NS5-branes and D-brane dynamics near a conifold singularity. We pay special attention to a configuration of D3- and D5-branes that realizes N=1 supersymmetric QCD and discuss the massless spectrum and classical moduli of this setup in detail.     Spin 3 cubic vertices in a frame-like formalism

    Till now most of the results on interaction vertices for massless higher spin fields were obtained in a metric-like formalism using completely symmetric (spin-)tensors. In this, the Lagrangians turn out to be very complicated and the main reason is that the higher the spin one want to consider the more derivatives one has to introduce. In this paper we show that such investigations can be greatly simplified if one works in a frame-like formalism. As an illustration we consider massless spin 3 particle and reconstruct a number of vertices describing its interactions with lower spin 2, 1 and 0 ones. In all cases considered we give explicit expressions for the Lagrangians and gauge transformations and check that the algebra of gauge transformations is indeed closed.Comment: 17 pades, no figure

    On the relation between local and geometric Lagrangians for higher spins

    Equations of motion for free higher-spin gauge fields of any symmetry can be formulated in terms of linearised curvatures. On the other hand, gauge invariance alone does not fix the form of the corresponding actions which, in addition, either contain higher derivatives or involve inverse powers of the d'Alembertian operator, thus introducing possible subtleties in degrees of freedom count. We suggest a path to avoid ambiguities, starting from local, unconstrained Lagrangians previously proposed, and integrating out the auxiliary fields from the functional integral, thus generating a unique non-local theory expressed in terms of curvatures.Comment: 14 pages.
